Came up with a idea to get better smoke from my Master Built smoker! I load the tube with 3 or 4 pieces that i split off a hickory chunk that I use in my charcoal smoker. I then dump those into the smoker tray. Then I put 3 or 4 more sticks in the tube and slide it into the smoker but don't dump it. After a while the heat from below ignites the wood in the tube and it begins smoking also.I have yet to have a fire start and because the tube is above the element anyway, I have not seen any damage to the tube because the wood is burning in it slowly. When the wood in the tube gets about half way burned, I dump it into the tray below and load the tube again with some more small chunks! The test is ongoing but I have been doing this for a while and it works great for me.A richer, deeper smoke in the meat! Who doesn't want that? Here are a few pics!
