Take the side covers off and take a look at the mechanism. There are screw pins (for lack of the right term) that the arms glide on and they are not that well made and can bend. I've had to replace one on mine. It's a pretty simple mechanism and you should be able to see if something is amiss just by eyeballing it.

Deroc, try this. I found when I first got mine if pushed straight down on it it was hard. Found you can push it forward just a little with your hand and mash it down real easy. If you are using your foot that might be hard to do. The way my boat is set up I release mine by hand every time. Like WB said taking the covers off exposes everything in the mechanism so you can see exactly what it is doing.

If that's the same pin WB is talking about, mine broke.......the pin that the arms spin on. I called MK, and that pin is obsolete now, they upgrade to a better pin with two screws, where you have to drill the hole out and install them.....I ordered one for each side, and they were simple to install and they look like they are much better than the old ones. They must have had a lot of complaints about the "screw pins" breaking. I don't think that's your problem, though because I fished with mine a couple of times while it was broken until the replacements came in. Are you pushing the lever in before you try to press down? I think you have to push in and down.
