I hear the 9 series aren't nearly as good as the 8 series. If you were in the market what would you go with

900s and 800s have the same problem . they supposedly improved the side imaging at the expense of the 2d. Mainly the 83hz. I can't see the difference with my 997 si. lots of discussion on the topic.
Crappie bite twice a day. 15 minutes before I get there and 10 minutes after I leave.

Hardly any difference between the 2 on viewable screen. Big price difference. The new 8 series comes with a compact transducer. Most recommend leaving it in the package and doing a swap out with humminbird for the larger transducer that comes with the 9 and 11 series. Like Gomer said, they changed soft ware to inhance SI and DI on new units at the expense of the 2d. If you use 2d a lot you won't be happy with the new units. Lots of discussion on BBC,and the Humminbird sites about it. Don't see anything they plan to do to fix the problem anytime soon. I have a earlier 998 and it's pretty good even though it's 2d could be better also. If I were buying today I would go with 8 series and upgrade transducer.

Buddy of mine were talking about this today. Got a new 899 coming in from David at Shut and Fish. We were planning the install and it was a question we didn't know the answer to. Great info on this site.
