Default Anybody know much about timber?

Meeting with a fella this afternoon to do a TSI cut. Mostly hackberry, few other hardwoods and sycamores. Not touching any of the persimmon, oak, or locust trees. No idea what is a fair price, my main concern is not having to pay out of pocket, but I don't wanna leave money on the table. Its only 15 acres, but we have a block of just under 100 acres a few landowners are getting cut together. Any insight will be appreciated.

Look up your County Forester with the MS Forestry Commission.....he can write you a management plan free of charge and also advise you on timber values etc.
I am retired from the MFC. 31 years.....Been out of the loop now for 15 so I am not up to date on timber values etc. Lots of free services available from your County Forester or Area Forester that your tax dollars pay for so give him a call....he can also assist you with a timber sale.

15 acres of some hardwoods. Most everyone that I've known of that had a logging company come in and removed timber has made $400 to $800. This place and the neighbor's, 4 acres each got $400. Mother's 20 acres got $800. My uncles 18 acres got $650. This was 10 to 25 years ago.

no problem - hardwood sawlogs for that area $ 22-24 per ton and hardwood pulpwood $7-9 per ton. now the forester can tell you how many tons you have

Thanks for all the help. I'm not looking to turn a huge profit, just want to be able to invest some of the money back into it planting mast bearing trees for the wildlife. If I can get around $500 or up, I will let them do it. Honestly I had the chainsaw and tractor ready to start when it dried up. If I get anything off of it, it will save me some backbreaking work with the wrong equipment. Not to mention clean up. Thanks for the info, down the road we may get the landowners together to get a management plan going. Right now, the canopy is shading out and killing all of the small trees and browse. Majority of trees are 12"+ diameter, so even with pulpwood prices, I think we are ok. One guy has a timber cruiser who owes him a favor, may look into that.
