I know there's a separate electronic section but I'd rather stick with my home state folks. Here's my scenario:
All I've ever owned before is your basic 14ft John boat with a 15hp outboard. I've always had a depth finder but usually the the cheaper models. My current one on there is a Eagle 350c. I recently bought me a 20' champion fiberglass boat and I'm trying to get it set up. My intentions are mainly crappie (single pole and trolling) and catfishing in the late summer. My prefer $$ range is 3-500 with 600$ being the absolute max right now because I'm in the process of buying other things for the boat and gear. I'd like for it to be side imaging or down scan capable but it's not an absolute requirement. The only requirement I have is atleast a 5" screen and gps and preferably user friendly.(easy to learn) Any suggestions fellas?
I'm eying the HDS 5 but heard the hummingbird was cheaper and easier to learn. All of this will be a learning experience for me.
thanks for taking time to read this and chime in!

Find a Humminbird 898 SI/DI used, should be around $600. A new HB 859 with down imaging and no side imaging is $599.

Hummingbird 788 or 597. Don't be afraid to buy used. I bought a new unit and used unit and in it for less than your maximum price. Be patient, something will come up.
I just picked up a new 798 on CL for a good price. Just keep your eyes open.
