can't say much for the rest down here--but i can drive in the stuff. Ice is tuff, hills are tuff, and accidents do happen- but it can be done. Worst one was coming from Alabama back to AR and when you crossed the bridge on I240 it was like you flipped a switch--solid ice from West Memphis to Texarkana--took 8hrs to get just the other side of Little Rock. What is bad are the other people--if it weren't for the ones that aren't used to the stuff it wouldn't be a problem.

Which bridge on I240?
The Weather Channel lost it's contract with Directv. Having to watch some other form of weather, I can't stand it either.
Just watched CNN. it was reported 24 hours early of what to expect as the front moved through the areas. Closings were to late when ordered. Our schools would have been closed the evening before it started.
Cities like Atlanta, Birmingham, Jackson and others don't have enough road supplies for what they are getting. They don't get this kind of weather often so they can't prepare for it. One city reported not seeing this kind of weather in 35 years.

I think it was more the ice that hurt us. A lot of he roads were frozen, and these peeps don't slow down they just keep on trucking.
-
I hauled the boat down I-55 with 2 inches of ice and snow a couple years. Have driven firetrucks in all kinds of conditions. Just have to slow down and anticipate...no sudden braking!

I think the main problem was untreated ice.
-
Untreated ice, and non-thinking, brainless retards behind the steering wheels. 1/4 of an inch of ice on the vehicles, doors frozen shut on the vehicles, and they still getting out to go to McDonalds to get breakfast. News reporter on the T.V. says stay home the roads are to dangerous to drive on, then complains the Dairy Queen is closed and he can't get a cup of coffee...Oh boy....

ATL doesn't have an I240, just Memphis.
