More than likely a small coffee can.
It looks to be about the size of a Campbell's Chunky soup can, but shorter. There were a few more home canners that used cans instead of jars back then. A rim wouldn't have been a problem to put on after the can went through the hole with a sealer.
My uncle would go the the dock close to downtown Memphis at night. Lay out a few slices of bread on the edge of the dock, pour a little beer on the bread. Come back a little later, slide the bucket along the side of the dock and wipe the bread with roaches into the bucket, dig the bread out to sit it up and do it again. That was back in the day when the train ran to Lakeview Resort.
