Sounds like your seats are worn out, that's what is eating your washers up. They are usually a quick fix if you have an old time plumbing store nearby that an match the up. Don't even think about asking a big box store.

Okay , have to add my stupid comments(wearing the crown). Is it true your shower is only 4 ft up from the floor? Also, wasn't but a couple days ago you was working on a electrical problem on your car!Saw your bride on the calendar, you too. She looks way taller than you. Us short guys like them tall girls. Make the best slow dance partners. :) Okay going for more of the crown. Good luck with the plumbing. I don't like to work on it myself. Danny
Stems are probably shot too, if it is a Gerber or pfister they have the whole set at THD or Lowes
Call Feelays buddy and put it to bed. Cheaper to get it fixed right first time.
This plumbing is from the early 80's. All metal. The valves are brass--and I would agree new seats are needed--only problem with that is--once the brass valves are out--there aint nothing else to come out or put back in:banghead The boss just informed me--it's all got to go and I quote " I want it replaced" and my answer was "yes ma'am"
The seats are in the hole behind the brass stems. They are what the stems push the washer against to turn the water off. You need a seat wrench to get them out, it's kinda like an Allen wrench, you stick the proper sized wrench in the seat and it will unscrew. All that being said if the "BOSS" said she wants a new one then get her a new one! Life is much simpler that way.
I've got the seat wrenches if you want to use them
