In my younger days as a structural steel worker we had a close call with lightning, and it will put your butt in high gear. My cousin and I were setting steel beams on a 110' structure at the paper mill in Counce, when we noticed a heavy rain approaching from down river below Pickwick Dam. I suggested we cut the crane loose, tighten up the beam and get down. We had just removed the steel choker and waved the boom away when my cousin says "what's that?" As the hair on our bodies stood up and tingled. That was followed by a BOOM as lightning hit the 250' crane boom that had just swung away. Words were not needed at that point. We both stood up and ran to a perimeter column and slid fireman style to the ground. I no longer feel the urge to test my luck when it comes to lightning.

I was fishing in a creek last spring when a storm came up from nowhere. There was so much electricity in the air, everytime i touched the metal reel holder it would shock me.After a couple shocks i realized what was happening, threw the rod down and set in the bottom of the boat til it passed.Too close for comfort.

just remember one thing lightning can strike you from 5 to 10 miles away !!! Its best to head for cover when you hear the first sound of thunder!!!

I to was a union iron worker for forty years, just retired last year and I learned to respect lightning along time ago. Our daughter was struck at a picknic at Greers several years back. Very scary!!!!

Would have had to shovel out the boat to keep the back end from sinking! It wasn't their time!
