A Mitsubishi G4M "Betty" painted in special markings for the carrying of Japanese delegates preparing for the formal surrender arrives at Ie Shima on the first leg of a trip that utlimately took the delegates to the Philippines in a C-54 transport plane. This image was taken on August 19, 1945, sixty-eight years ago today.

One of the Japanese commanders got off one of there and presented his sword in surrender to my Dad, who was standing by his L-3 to fly him on the the official surrender site.

I'm trying to wrap my head around the idea of a war where there were two easily distinguished sides and one of those sides officially gives up and concedes.
