How many links, length, of rope and chain do u run. What do u store them in. Mine is rusting badly. Do u use one chain or two small ones?

I took Rees advice on this and they work perfectly. One chain in a light wind and if its gets kinda rough just throw the second one overboard. I got two new drift socks that I havent even used yet bc of these chains. But they will come in handy sooner or later I guess.

depends on the boat size and wind on weather we run a big chain or small one, 50ft out or 10ft out. really need to trial and error what works best for your boat in the conditions given. all chains are going to rust unless you buy the coated. drift sock is hard to beat. imo

Being new to this, I am thinking you are throwing chains over the windward side of the boat to slow it down for wind trolling. I saw a youtube video when I was first trying to learn about crappie fishing where he put a chain out.

With that in mind, Was thinking of repurposing my two trolling buckets. One on the front cleat, one on the back of the windward side. My plan is to put a driftmaster bar on the deck boxes to where I can sit on the front chair and my wife in the back fishing the sides.

Although I have noticed that the buckets keep the boat from "corking" fully in rough water. In other words, they hold the boat down and I wonder if I will be risking getting a wave over the side since that will be taking the brunt.

Maybe I should just get off the water if it gets that rough.

Am I off base with my thinking ?
    Comments appreciated.

Downsouth that was the first thought that hit me when you said you were going to run them off the side. Wouldn't want to risk it if it gets very rough, but see where it has potential if it's not rolling. Think you would still want to use your troller for some control.

Guys, I have heard Feelay warn about this several times. If you are fishing out of a tin boat you need to be extra careful, in ruff water you could take on ALOT of water quick if one of your chains got hung. Another good idea is to put a pool noodle on each rope so if you have to cut em loose for whatever reason you can retrieve them.

Hang a sock on a stump and you'll change that opinion. They have their time and place.

I agree--I've steered clear of that stuff--but will be searching for some of that water--so will have to add chains to my arsenal at some point.
