Rare occasion when I do use chains, I always use two off the back cleats. Need to go faster, pull in close. Need to go slower, let out more rope. Two 5' sections of 3/8" chain on 50' ropes has always worked for me.
This makes a lot of sense to me, as the more you let out the more drag you would have, the slower you would go.....Some times everyone needs a little direction to think outside the box....thx
I have a tin 17' boat. I took Rees Guide's advice on the chains. I bought 2 galvanize chains 5 foot long in 5/16 links and connected them to 25 foot of rope. I pull one on each side from the back of my boat. That way my boat stays straight, and chains pull even. I store them in a 18v Dewalt drill bag in my front compartment. I also put quick disconnects on the end at the boat for a quick get away if I need to. I didn't put any noodles on mine yet, but I am going to today. The galvanize helps a little on the rust, but them will all rust after a while:twocents
Thanks
