cray....you could just get a few spray cans of Rustoleum paint in different colors and do a camo job on it....stock metal and all.....that would protect the whole gun out in the elements. I did a old 22 rife like that one time that I kept on the tractor with me.

As far as finishing I would do just what G said. I like the look of wood myself. Like the way the rub on poly comes out also. This being said, if it stays in a harsh environment alot go with the Spar, marine grade poly as G stated early, heck G knows his stuff dude, he aint gonna steer ya wrong.
Start with paint remover and steel wool. Let it set for 3 days or more after all the old stuff is removed. Apply new stain if needed. Apply a few coats of rub on poly.
A lot of times I remove the old finish by scrapeing with a small piece of glass. Yours looks like it will come off pretty easy.
How old is the 410? Is it worth anything as a antique?If it's real ole restoration might take value away!
Looking at the picture of the stock, any clean up would bring more value to it than as it is.
