I've got an 01 90 hp merc and....it is very simple. Most important thing is to put it in gear before you pull it down. The first time I did it, I had to whack the lower unit with a rubber mallet pretty good to get it loose, but everytime after it comes right off. Takes less than an hour.

if it doesn't seem like a lot of water is coming out, pull the cover and pull the hose off the fitting where the water shoots out of the motor and let it pump directly out of the hose for a minute and make sure you don't have any debris clogging the hole in the fitting. Make sure you are ready to catch the fitting when you pull the hose cause it will fall right out of the motor when hose isnt connected. I've run into that a couple of times also. Just my 2 cents.

I pulled the cover the other day on the water and checked to see if the hose was stopped up. It appeared to be clean and no obstuctions. Gonna recheck it this evening.

Do not try and hold off from doing this like you do everything else. Very simple job and should only cost you very little money

Supposed to do it every year or two, Don. You don't want to wait until it fails.
