Enid lake Habitat day
Habitat help: The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Enid Lake's annual habitat improvement activities will be held on Feb. 2 at the Enid Lake Field Office. Volunteers should report to the field office (264 C.R. 39) at 7 a.m. The USACE and Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) select lake areas each year benefitting from habitat improvement. In 2013, fish shelters will be placed in the Wallace Creek, Hubbard Creek and Billy's Creek areas. Volunteers should bring all-terrain vehicles (ATV's), gloves and wear clothing suitable for work in muddy lake bottom areas. Lunch will be provided by Enid Lake volunteers. In 1993, the USACE joined with concerned sportsmen, fishing clubs and members of the local communities to form the Enid Lake Habitat Volunteer Association. Through this partnership the annual event known as Habitat Day was organized. Volunteers donate time and equipment to construct and place fish shelters from discarded cedar and Christmas trees, using ATV's to drag the trees to designated locations and then anchor them with concrete weights along creek beds and other areas. Restoration of fish habitat is important to the future fisheries at Enid Lake and provides continued benefits to sportsmen and visitors. According to studies performed by MDWFP, the restoration program has provided benefits to the fish and habitat in Enid Lake. Although the primary mission of Enid Lake is flood damage risk reduction more than 1.5 million visit the 44,000-acre recreational area annually to enjoy the camping, playgrounds, swimming areas, several types of trails, fishing, boat ramps, marinas and marina slips. Enid Lake is one of the four lakes in north Mississippi maintained and operated by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District.
