Spend another1500 and get a new one
We have both a '00 and a '05 Rancher, both ES, both used daily around the farm for all sorts of activities/work from hauling 300lbs of feed at a time to pulling my utlity trailer loaded with firewood and dragging dead dee out of the woodsr. Have had no issues at all with the transaxles on either of these bikes and they are not babied whatsoever. I do all the routine maintenance myself (fluids and plugs) and haven't had to throw money at them other than new tires when needed. I bought the wife a 2009 Kawasaki Bayou 250 to play around with but we had so many issues in 6 months of owning it that we unloaded it on Craigslist and just kept our two Hondas. I wouldn't think tiwce about buying another new Rancher ES when one of ours poops out, wouldn't own anything else.
When ya look at the "cycle trader" mags or in the paper or internet, you see lots of Polaris, Kawasaki, yamaha, and so on. Used Hondas are scarce, since most folks buy them and keep them forever. I have a '96 300 that has been great.
I've had two Hondas, and will buy a third if can wear out my 02 Rubicon. Tough to wear one out if ya take care of it, and do the maintenance. They are built to last!!!

I have a 93 fourtrax. most reliable 4wheeler ever. used for anout 60 days strait and left for a solid 180 without starting
It kicks right on every time. I have driven friends 06 with electric shift and liked it but it made me nervous not having that foot shifter there.
Got a 350 Grizzly auto 4/4 from lake hill a couple of years ago really like it. Don't want no ES couple of friends have them and to many switch problems for me. Last one I had was Honda and it lasted forever.
I think we are going to have to change his name from WB (wannabe) to MB (money bags). First a big new boat, a new Terrova, been off work for a month taking the B's deer hunting. Now a new 4 wheeler. Them bankers have it all.
I am a '76 model ES. As skinny as the B's are, I figure that I could tote them around the woods pretty good, and no more deer than yall kill, I can drag em out. I can be had for 3K.
The 76 model is a little hard to get started in the cold tho
I just got a new rancher, and I also opted to stay away from the ES
well I wish I had a 10 wheller to sell, kinda think that is what you need, at least you would stand a better chance of staying up right
