Lansky are the best out there. You don't want a steel to steel sharpener. Lansky has diamond dust on their sharpening rods.

a good sharpener is mandatory but if you don't have a quality blade on your knife it is not much use. i have three old timers that are thirty years old or better that hold a edge better than any knife i have held. i have skinned more deer than i want to count and probably 5-700 squirrels in my day and they need very little sharpening to get them back on edge. you get what you pay for and a quality steel in the blade is a must........

The Edgemaker is a great sharpener for doing it quick. If you want to take some time it would be the Lansky.

SPYDERCO. At Sportsman. The best I have ever used. It will sharpen everything you got.

Windstone, give us an education. What constitutes "good steel" as far as a blade goes? There's all kinds touted out there, but you mentioned Ole Timer, which I fairly detest. To me, they sharpen fine, but the high carbon means they tarnish quickly and easily plus, to me, they don't hold the edge for long as all.

On a lark, yesterday, I ordered a new Kershaw Black Blur. It has Sandvik 14C28N stainless steel. So...how did I do? I've owned several Kershaw's and have been impressed with them all. But I couldn't tell you the exact steel in any of the ones I've had.

sir wannabe, i don't know doodley dolittle about steel. i do suspect the steel they used on these knifes back then were of a better grade than the ones today. all i know is what i said. these ole timers sharpen very easy and holds a edge like none other i have dealt with. if i don't loose them they should easily last me the days i have remaining.
