Nope, I'm broke cause I'm saving up to go surprise DD on the coast
Torch, I'm running four 5 & 1/2'ers, two 6 'ers, two 8'er, two 10'ers, and two 12'ers. I fish 'em all out of the back of the boat and all the lines are about 2' apart. When fish bite more than one rod I'll pick the second rod up and set the hook and replace it into the holder until I have time to get to it while holding the other rod. Same thing if multiple rods bend over. From experience I will tell ya you will loose some fish and you will have some tangles. I dont know of anyone that longlines multiple poles that dont get tangles and loose some fish every now and again. Doesnt really matter when theyre biting so good you cant get to 'em all though. Here's a pic of my longline setup in action...
I must be missing something.I don't see any advanges, LL verses spider rigging. If it's to cover more water put more weight on and speed up, or take weight off and let more line out.If it's the action, nothing beats a minner. But what do I know i'm just a humble weekend warrior.
But,didn't you just take all those noises and movement right thru the fish, before your baits get there.Wills
I agree. I do both, BUT...alls I can tell ya is I NEVER caught so many fish as I have longlining. I think by using curly tail jigs youre more after a reaction strike and as crappie are predator fish theyre reacting more to the passing by jigs rather than feeding their bellies as I feel they do with minnows. I'm an amauter at all of this fishing. It's just my opinion.
yep....gabowman has a great boat....I like it
From what I've been readin, LL has the advantage of covering more water, flats, ledges, channels, etc. I figure spider riggin has the advantage in fishin cover like brush piles, stake beds, trees, etc. I'm just learning to LL, but that's my take on it. I think spider riggin is way easier. Don't have as much depth, jig size, line out, and speed to figure. Gotta take a lot of time on the water to figure LLin out.
What makes long lining more productive than cranking othere than different day different bait????
Rees here is my thought on that. As the water cools crappie get where they won't chase a baits far or moving very fast. To get the rattle and wobble from a crank it need to be pulled 1.5+ which is pretty fast for cold water crappie. LL you can slow down to .6-.7mph and also give them a smaller profile bait. Just my .02 and I would rather pull cranks but sometime you just have to change.
W hat i have noticed about a lot of the rigs is they have 10-15 poles out now with 2 hooks per poles that about 30 baits in the water, got a good snag ratio. On the coe lake with a 5 pole and 2 hook limit you got 20 baits in the water,i like minners better.
What little I know of it, that's my take too. Just a different look and presentation for 'em. I know I was getting kilt by the 21 boats around me spider rigging the other day but held my own Long Lining for the next hour in and amongst 'em. And this is me we're talking about here. :)

I won't say it is more productive any given day. For numbers of aggressive fish, it is more productive when the fish are above 15'. You have the advantage of covering an area quickly. Similar to crank baits, reaction bites are what you are looking for. I have seen days where the long liners waxed the big fish while the spider riggers only caught a few. The next day just the opposite. Use long line trolling as a tool to go in the box with crank'n, spiderrig'n, single pole'n, dock shoot'n, and C4 when all else fails! It does take longer to figure out the right combination of line length, jig head weight, speed, and colors. Don't make it harder than anything else because it will change day to day and hour to hour.
I like to use it for scouting as much as anything. Pre-fishing a tournament, long line trolling will help figure out what areas to focus on. May long line the tournament or come back spider rig it. Alot of tournaments are won by teams spider rigging, but long line trollers have been in the top 10 and not far off the winning weights at those same tournaments as well as winning quite a few too. The recent Crappie Masters Classic had the majority of the teams single pole or spider rigging certain brush piles or ledges, yet the winning team was side pulling jigs (another form of long line trolling).
Oh, and don't be scared of pulling in the thick stuff too. Jig heads and grubs are too cheap to worry about losing a few. Lake Talquin in Northwest Florida is probably the stumpiest lake in the South, yet long line trolling is the preferred method there all year long. A lot of really nice slabs come from there year after year. You will lose jigs, but you will catch quality fish.
Just remember what you were doing when you catch one and try to repeat.
Thumbs Up
