Default Man this boat buying can get under your skin real quick or at least mine

went with son to finalize his purchase and they didnt have boat finished so a burnt run today, said it would be ready in the morning for sure. I got to looking at his "buyers order" and look and see this charge on there "PPS 899.00" and ask them what it was, then it got exciting they told me that was for the additional 2yr Mercury warranty on the motor and a 5 year warranty on the electronics, I called their hand cause at the other dealership they had sign up everywhere that said somthing like "sign and ride for 5 year Merc warranty" which would be them giving him an extra 2 years. Well we went round a little while and just told them to give his deposit back and we would talk it over and let them know in the next day or 2 and loaded up and came home. He was a little depressed that he might not get that particular boat but I explained to him that I didnt like the way they tried to get him on that and If I hadnt come with him to check it out they would have succeeded and then it would have been to late. They did tell me that the extra warranty covered the trolling motor and all electronics for 5 years but I just dont know if its worth it. I mean gauges, trolling motor and what else, Im not sure, it it is aerators, bilge pumps, and what other things I might be missing. I thought well the would cover the trim and tilt but wouldnt that be covered under the warranty on the motor ? I dont mind him paying it if its worth it but just didnt like the way the just added it and didnt tell him. Is the extra worth it ? any of you guys familiar with the warranty they are referring to ?

    Thanks

    Larry

Larry, it's just like any other car/boat/atv dealership, get everything in writing.

Cancelling a decision a grown man and his wife made together is a position I would have stayed out of. Did his wife revoke his man card when he went home and told her Daddy wouldn't let them buy that boat? Sounds like you emberassed him when YOU told the dealership to cancel his order; I know I would have been emberassed.
If he is in a position at 23 years old to be able to buy a $15,000 boat he is obviously doing alot right. Sounds like you need to back off, gently offer advice, and just be proud of him. An $899 mistake isn't that significant. Lord knows I have made many much more costly.
    Just my 2 cents worth.

well on a tracker the TM cost 300.00 to replace and 99.00 for fish finder. Mercury has a 5 year warranty from the factory. I would not pay it either. Dealers get you with all these add ons.

Thanks but I wasnt gonna let him lose 899 and he actually told them he wanted his money back after we discussed it. He sent me a text this morning thanking me for being there with him yesterday and helping him not to screw up Guess he thinks different than you do

Thanks Torch, I just didnt know exactly what the extra warranty covered and if it was like the gauges, a TM I just dont see paying it. I also didnt like the idea that they told him he had all these warranty coverages and lead him to believe that it was the way the setup came. When I saw the 899 on there and ask him what it was, he didnt even know

Are you gonna let him lose $3,000+ in depreciation when he tows it off the lot?

AR after reading your post a few more times, what you say is very true in most cases and I tend to agree with, but my dad wouldnt have never even bothered to help me. My son and myself have a relationship that is like friends to a degree. I discussed everything that went on and advised him and he made the final calls on all the deal. He wasnt at all happy of the way they had promised him certains and then didnt produce and the fact that they put some things in there that they didnt bother to tell him about either. I work in sales and I believe in full disclosure on every motorcycle, atv, pwc that I sell and I had expected that from them. Your point is well made and Im sure it would apply to most case but I guess I came across as "I" took control and all I did was steer him in the direction I thought was best and he made the calls. The man card thingy, well not a big deal his is a Christian young man and that is the man card I am proudest of for him
