I don't use rope, and recomend you don't either. Buy the bouy harness, it has a snap ring you can clip to the tie down ring on the back of the transome. The first sock I had, I cheaped out and had it tied to a cleat with rope....It is at the bottom of a lake somewhere now. If you do go with a rope, you only need about ten or fifteen feet at most and try to rig some type of foam noodle or float on it in case it comes loose.
