    Default HELP... Buying used boat!!

There is a boat for sale that I'm interested in buying, but don't know if its a good deal/worth fixing up. The owner says that the engine doesnt work currently which is a Johnson 100. He doesnt know the brand of boat other than its a 80's model. there are no leaks or holes... He's asking for $600 this includes boat and trialer... any thoughts or advice from anyone would be appricated. Thanks!

I agree with Major but I would take a good cranking battery with me and make sure it will turn over and if it does then you could check the compression. If the engine is blown then I would pass but if it only needs the carbs cleaned, a new fuel pump bladder, fuel filter, impeller and some fresh gas then I would go for it

After talking to the guy on the phone I'm thinking it's more than just cleaning the carbs. He mentioned that he had taken it apart and that it is currently not working is all he said. How much would a new/used engine cost to replace it if needed?

Ask and see if you can carry it and have a qualified local mechanic take a took at the motor first.

If the boat and trailer are sound not too bad. Can find a used motor not to expensive wont be a bad investment.

I agree with munta, and 100 hp on that boat is way too much anyway. I have a 28hp Johnson what will hook right up, excellent shape, was running a couple years ago when I put it in the barn, but now needs a carb job, I'm sure. May not be as much as you want, but it'll get you there and back. I'll knock 100 off for you to get the carbs done, now it's $400, u come get it.
