I'm not much of an engineer. I bought one at cabela's that has 8 tubes and it fits in a 3/4 pedestal base. Works good! Tried to find it to give ya a link, no luck. I'll keep trying.

Here is a link for vertical rod holders

    http://www.crappie.com/crappie/main-...transport.html

I saw another kind that someone made on this site and can not for the life of me find it now. The way I remember it is the maker cut slots length ways in the pvc with a router bit and heated the ends of the pipe with a torch and flared the ends open, similar to swaging copper plumbing pipe. I can't remember what he used to flare the ends, but I think it was as simple as just pushing the heated end against something round. It resulted in a really neat and professional product.

There are other ideas for vertical rod holders on this site if you do a search, I went through several pages and could not find the one described above. Good luck.

Think mines 1"1/4 or 1" 1/2, but I hardly use mine since I built my rack that holds 10 rods down the side of the boat.
