customer service is a big part of the overall package, call LOWRANCE get help, call HUMMINBIRD get help, had HUMMINBIRD, now I don't good product, but after owning a lowrance got to say they are pretty easy to use. I like the 7 better than the 8, now on the customer service part. I'm old, lazy, get up late, go to bed early, don't like many, and most don't like me. now having said that I never have had a problem with lowrance customer service NEVER. always got what I ask for, and most of the time I just email and bam answer and problem fixed, most problems were my fault for not reading, and taking advice from C.C members, so keep asking, checking and when you make a decision it will be informed and you will be ahead of the game. once again good luck on your choice,
was it was SLOWWWWWW as all get out. When I first got my 520c, it went out after 3 trips so I called and talked to them. Well, it was send it in and we'll send you a new one. I thought that was neat but when it took 8 weeks to get it back, I was PO'd real bad
Beagle, you might want to have your med levels adjusted. That was plum.....nice......I'm thinking you need to have your qualude dose cut in half. :)
Wannabe...
Don't let them get you down Beagle, Lol :D
I know the feeling........sometimes the same person will tell you two differn't things.
sorry guys but keep coming up with questions and I have been looking around the net and youtube but cant seem to find what I need. I am wandering on the mounting of the ss transducer, I understand it has to be mounted on the right side (as you sit in the boat), I was wandering if you have to tilt your motor in order for the side scan to work ? I have a tiller steering alum 16ft G3 and I dont have tilt on my motor, so I was wandering if I have to lift my motor each time I stop in order to use the side scan ? Im sure that is a dumb question but is is one I have to ask :)
Ok disregard this question, I have saw where guys are running the outboard at 4mph and doing a sidescan, so I am to assume that means the motor dont have be in the down position :)
thanks
maachuu
It will work without tilting your motor.
Thanks G3, was I right on where the mounting should be ? also if I go with ext gps, can it be mounted at the back of my boat on a slant, since the corner of my boat is slanted and not flat ? Man I know you guys will be praying for me to get a new FF or at least shut up, with all the questions I am asking LOL
maachuu
It will work without tilting provided that there is a clean line of sight to each side of the transducer. You do not have to mount your ducer on the starboard side. It is recommended due to the turbulence from the prop though. I mounted mine on the G-3 on the port side and it worked fine. The SI on a h'bird works fine at around 2 mph up to about 4 ish. below that and it gets skewed and above that it does as well.
Now as far as H'bird vs Lowrance goes....I done tolt ya all you need to know and even double underlined it. You need to listen to me. These other yahoos are just wannabes.
But I will recap....buy what you want and or can afford. You'll like either as long as it's 898 sized or above.
Wannabe...
Welp are yall recommendin side scan mainly for up front on the TM, and down imaginin for the console??:o
Side imagining for the console.
Thanks fellers, least nows yall understand how lil I know bout this electronic stuff
I'm gonna go against the grain and say turn it sideways. That way you can see 150' ahead of you and 150' behind. :)
Console capt. Console. It is possible at the TM, but it's not as useful.
Wannabe...
well mine will be at the back of the boat by my seat since I have a tiller motor, I have a lowrance fish ID on the front
maachuu
Yup I gots it now WB thanks. I was a thinkin bout it workin best a slower speeds it might needs to be up front. Usually what happens when I goes to thinkin too hard:D
Oh I am getting so much more confused :( ok guys I think I have it narrowed down to either the 898 or 997 but was reading about the HDS7 and 8 Lowrance havin such a better display, but if I and looking right the lowrance units are gonna be close to or over 2000 bux and I aint got that deep of rainy day fund. so thats what is pushing me back to the HB's
thanks to all for you input so far, I really really do appreciate it :)
maachuu
Well maachuu the HB's a very expensive also......so what are you going to do? The 898c is 1500 bucks and a 998c is 2000 bucks.
as I said I am more confused than I was when I started LOL but I have found the 898 at HB factory outlet for 1349.99 free shipping and it is a new unit and I can add 2 year warrant for 59.95. I guess I am leaning towards this unit at this point but hey Im beginning to act like a woman about changin my mind LOL no offense to you CN
M
Decisions....decisions.....ain't it fun, Lol. :D
Maachuu, time to make a decision. Think long, think wrong. Like what you get.
That location should be fine maachuu. Rome was not built in a day maachuu....take your time, think things out...be sure of exactly what you want before you get it. Sometimes I actually wind up talking myself out of some things.
Ya aint by yourself m, I am purty confused myself. Some reason i am leanin toward the HDS unit. But kinda like the 898 & 997 too. Think I will jest keep mullin it over and readin all I can about em from these smarter fellers. Dang still got to get a Terrova too. Some of these toys is sure expensive:(
Thing about it is, you'll like whichever one you get. They both have their good points. Both use really great technology.
I hear ya capt, I already have and Ipilot and just trying to justify buyin a new ff since my other one is only bout 6 months old but dont have side scan. I was at all familiar with the side scan when I bought back then and have been reading more and more about it and I just gots to have me one :)
maachuu
I have been reading and asking questions on these units for over a year now........I am leaning towards the Lowrance.
Maachuu, I found a submerged road today that I had been hearing about but never really knew exactly where it was. No doubt, either unit HB or LO would have shown that road.
998 on front and 788 on the bow but when pulling cranks, I don't even plug in the 788.
