From my experience with them your better off with a tape measure and a sharpie before you go. Mark it every 10 or 20ft and just count it out as it spools off.

Anybody every used the Shakespeare Line Counter Deluxe? I know most use the Okuma reels that have built in line counters. Since I am trying out the whole trolling thing... I was thinking about trying some on my bass rods for starters. I read they don't work good with braid but I will be using 10 and 12 mono. If they are crappy (no pun intended) I will stick with the trusty estimating each foot and marking it with a sharpie.

i tried one of the counters and it would show 4 or 5 feet out when i had at least 15-20. My 2 cents...sharpie
The clip on kind are not worth the trouble you are better off just striping it off by hand or counting it back.

Double, most of the Shakespear ones I've seen have been in the 10 to 15 range. The Okuma LCs are only $25. Might get a couple just to see if you like it. They'd be easy as pie to sell for $15 or $20 here if you didn't like it no matter the condition.

A lot like the old Wannabe... except with fewer bad words. And Karate chop action. But, yes, still purtier than you.
Thanks fellas... I got 4 pole holders and 4 bass rigs. I will give it a try with the sharpie. If I catch some fish I am sure i will have Okumas before too long.. ha.
I hope to try out the rez Friday or Saturday. I got about 40 bandits in my box so I am ready...

Double, I started out with four set ups, two twelve footers and two ten footers, all with Okuma MA 15DX line counter reels. I just ordered two more rods and three more Okumas ( I tore one up at Sardis last week). If you're really into pulling cranks, you will appreciate those reels.
