Did you hit a stump or something ?
feelay I just had my lower done and it was 3300. might have been a bit cheaper but while i had the insurance folks helping i went to the good stuff.
Just replaced my prop shaft last winter. Went ahead and put a new water pump in while it was taken down. $364 total 90 Yamaha 4 stroke
I hit stuff all the time, logs, stumps, rocks, if it's in the lake, I'll hit it. Truth is I can't single out one incident. My boat is in the water way more than the average fishermans, I think it's due to lots of little strikes over time. Noticed it had a slight wobble over a year ago. Kept an eye on it, no water in the LU. But now, it is too bad to chance.
Feelay, if you haven't gotten water in the LU, then I would suspect just a bent prop or a spun hub. I can't imagine that this thing hasn't tried to shake itself apart unless you keep the RPMs down quite a bit. You might get off easy.
Try spinning the prop again, but this time just look at the shaft itself, not the prop. Stand behind it and keep an eye on the threaded part of the shaft that sticks out just behind the prop nut.
Feelay, go ahead and call your insurance guy. Let them look at it and tell him the bent shaft has hurt the case. Have your boat guy price a LU and labor, then fix the thing. I would rather have a new LU than fix one though.
I had a guy hit a rock dike two years ago and lost the lower unit on a 70 yamaha. LU, New stainless prop and labor was 4400.00. Could not find a rebuilt LU at the time. It also broke off all bolts going to LU. Had to drill them out and heli coil all the holes.
