    Default Mercury Trim

Anybody ever have an outboard trim itself down when the throttle was applied? I trim up to avoid ruining the skeg when driving onto the trailer, but the motor (2009 Mercury 75 HP fourstroke) seems to trim itself down if the throttle is pushed forward to past a certain point. I don't think the torque is overcoming the hydraulic piston because I can still trim at speed.

If you have it trimmed to high it will do just as you say. When I picked my motor up, the tech showed me the 5 or 6 holes in the mounting plate where you would manually pin the trim height, and said the if the motor is trimmed above the highest hole, and you apply throttle, it will lower itself as a safety feature. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I thought it was trimming itself down. Did your tech mention any way to disable this feature? I need to keep the motor trimmed high and apply throttle in order to get far enough onto the trailer.

Do you have a trim guage on your boat to go by or are you just winging it? It sounds like you are going to high and actually getting it above the trim range and into the tilt range. Try it with out bringing it up quite as high.

Thanks for the actual diagnosis G-3. Couldn't think that clearly at 4:30 this morning. I'm quite certain that he is getting into the tilt range, which is exactly the wording that the tech used with me when I picked mine up. CrappieRadio, if you don't want to ruin the skeg, maybe you could just ease the boat up on to the trailer, and then wench it the rest of the way up? As far as mentioning how to disable the feature, he didn't mention it. I think that the reason that feature is there, is so that you don't damage the power tilt/trim system, which could be very expensive to replace.

If you listen close you can hear it when it comes off of trim and gets on tilt....the two small cylinders is what operates the trim range.....when it comes off of them then the larger cylinder has got it and thats tilt...it makes a definate change in sound when it comes off of the trim cylinders. If you have a trim guage you can set it right everytime without any guess work. Also consider this....when you get out of the trim range and go to the tilt range your water pickup inlets can be out of the water some and you will not be provideing your motor with proper water supply. Your motor should not have to be up very high to load on the trailer.

That is a saftey feature , you do not want to disable it.

Thanks for all your input. I'm making do with a mismatched trailer-boat combo. Looks like it will continue to be a pain.
