I cut the shaft on a power drive with a good pair of tubing cutters,but when you get ready to drill the holes for the bolt slide a piece of 3/4 emt over the wires and inside the shaft, wont nick any wires.

Mr Jim you have got the right idea. It is no problem to cut the shaft will a pipe cutter but drilling the hole was the hard part.
