Alton Brown, the food geek with the Good Eats show on food network, made a ceramic smoker out of two big ceramic flower pots and a hot plate. Pretty cool actually, and definitely would work. Steel smokers are cheap, but are difficult to maintain a constant temperature, ceramic clay is the best for heat retention.

I have one (a knock off of sorts) made by bayou classic. It is called the cypress. I love the thing. It can use all of the same extra cool stuff that the egg has. The main dealer is located in rankin county. They are a good bit less, but certianly not cheap. Money well spent.
