got diesel?

TAE73, yeah, TDR is great, but I have to say I am always amazed how
much friendlier this place is. Not that we haven't had our moments on
here, but boy - esp. on the 3rd generation Dodge forum, those guys can
get NASTY! And I have posted ? there, and you might get 1 or 2 replies
out of 300 or more views, if you are lucky. Not so here, and I hope it
stays like that. :) I hear you on the smoking cummins, I would love to
soot the front of some of those little shoe-box cars up when they are
riding my bumper... If I didn't like my truck so much, I'd probably jam
on the brakes in front of some of them. You probably know the type,
they run up so close to your bumper, you can't even see them out of the
rearview. Like they are going to a fire or something. Just seeing a dually
brings out something in a lot of people, they just got to pass you or bust,
never mind you might already be going well over the speed limit. :rolleyes:

Sorry not taking it to Patoka for the Classic, we rented a houseboat at the marina, stayed in one last fall and they are really nice, so we reserved one on the chance that we would make it for the Classic. The rig is at the Mark Twain State Park campground right now, we went down last weekend to do some pre-fishin for the crappie masters tournie and we just left it there. Let me know if you will be at any other tournaments, would be happy to let ya see how ours is set up.

Just a word on diesels,been driving diesel cars and trucks for a long,long time and i feel it is the only way to go.My auto is a 1982 and has 275,000 miles on original engine gets 30mi. to the gallon and still running strong.My current truck is a f-250 super duty and average 17.5 mi per gal and can pull anything that is put behind it.However i really hate to see diesel costing more than regular gas.

What happened to diesel always being cheaper than gas during the summer. For the first time in my town, diesel is the same cost as gas 2.49. It has been 10 cents higher. I know the reason why its higher during the winter, but its summer and no one is using fuel oil. I am dreading what diesel will cost this winter.

Yes TDR, can be a bunch of tight lipped guys and some are rude. I always try to post with the same respect as I do on this site. I also use the same name as here. I did manage to get some smoke of out of mine. The other day, I passed a slow car pulling my boat. I downshifted to 5th. I looked in the side mirror to see if I was clear. I could see some black smoke coming out of it. Sure put a smile on my face.

My early diesel dealings were with
the 5.7 in GM cars and trucks - cost lots of people lots of money and turned
them off of diesels. But my Dad was always a mechanic, and it was not
such a big deal to him, an injector pump every 30-50,000, and an occasional
head gasket before they came out with the better head bolts and gaskets,
Mom had several Caprices and a 98 Olds though that could scare the heck
out of 30 mpg - Not much if any power, but that is why my Dad said he
mainly kept them all those years when I was first driving, he knew I had the
genetic dispostion to drive like a maniac, hard to go real fast in one of those :) I wonder to this day though, if he knew that his '79 Silverado would
do 100 pulling the boat :D Is your car a VW? I've seen a lot of them go
amazing number of miles, rabbits.

Ted, I got to wondering is your `03 a six speed or automatic? Mine is the six speed and I usually don’t have a heavy foot. Also when I say that I average 20 to 21 mpg that was driving back and forth to work, highway, empty, running about 60 to 65 mph. My boat doesn’t change the mileage much, but when hauling hay (a very heavy trailer and 13 big round bales) it will drop down to around 16 to18 mpg.

I love diesels myself. I wish I had a diesel truck but I'll have to settle for my F-150 with a 302 for now. I was a Mercedes mechanic for several years and got to know diesels well and think the car industry should put out more of them. I think they should make less powerfull ones for the trucks as a option. There is no reason they could not make one with enough power for the occasional heavy haul, and get 30 MPG. They are to busy trying to see which one can claim to have the most powerfull one to advertise with. The big Mercedes cars had a 3.0Liter inline 5 cylinder turbo and would get 28+ MPG all day long. And those cars wheighed 4000 to 5000 pounds empty. I have a 1978 300D non turbo with over 215000 on it and still runs good.

Yep, they are in a horsepower race, and it is doing nobody any good that
I can tell. I bought a 245 horse High Output just to get the 6 speed trans,
but if they would offer something with say 175 -200 horses and a 7 speed or
a split axle, tuned for mileage, I'd be all over it. Dodge used to offer more
than one power level, but it was just because some of the transmission
options were deemed not capable of handling the extra power - not much
or any mileage gained by going with the lower power motor. If I am very
careful, strictly hiway/unloaded, I can get 20 and change, with my camper
and boat, about 14-15 unless I flog it - can drop it to 11-12 with a lead
foot, and not really get there any quicker, so I don't do that anymore.
