Default My grandpas old Evinrude (a gift)

My fondest memories as a child was when my grandfather would take me fishing for the weekend, he along with my brother, were the ones responsible for my enjoyment of fishing. Sadly I lost my grandpa in 1968 when I was 10 but there is hardly a day goes by I don't think of him and especially when fishing is involved.

When grandpa passed, the estate was settled up and my dad inherited his old Evinrude. My dad did not inherit the "fishing gene"and rarely went, therefore the old motor sat for decades in his basement, moved from one area to another.

My dad is now approaching his 90th birthday and a few months ago expressed to me that he "was not going to be around forever" and wanted to make sure some old family possessions went to those who would respect them and hold onto.....not being tempted to sell just for a few bucks. He asked me what I would like, I said "Great Uncle Scotty's old Remington 10 shotgun" I used a lot as a kid, and "Grandpas old boat motor" I explained that the old Evinrude reminded me of those great childhood memories with him at the lake. Dad was more than happy to pass those along to me.

I'll need to get the old Evinrude looked at mechanically, heck now I'll need another boat to put it on......but having that motor is priceless to me, I'll look at it and vision Grandpa at the control again.

    I can totally relate ....

I was raised by my Grandparents, from 5th grade to post Military return to the States. They loved to fish for Crappie, and thus were the mentors in getting me started. I have two fly rods & automatic fly reels that were passed on to me, from my Grandpa. The reels are stored away, but the rods were used for decades ... until a few years ago. They're now stored in the same closet as all my other fishing gear ... a constant reminder of my roots in the sport of Crappie fishing, and all the great trips to the lake my Grandparents & I took.

Memories are priceless ... thanks for reminding us to cherish & pass them on !!

I had a 40hp with the same cover style. You're fortunate to have had those to create the memories with. I saw a 16' aluminum boat on Craigslist this morning that would do fine with that motor. Have fun with it.

My Grand father wasn't really into fishing but my Dad was. HAd always hoped to retire and be able to fish together. While that was not to be I still remember several of our fishing trips out on the local lake.
