Got a snake in the boat

Snakes don't chew on wiring, shred life jackets and carpet for dens, have large litters of babies multiple times per year, or pee near straight ammonia (which can be corrosive). Mice, rats, and squirrels do. I'd far rather have a rodent-repelling nonvenomous snake in my boat than rats, mice or squirrels.

How about trying to find out about the snake, because it could quite possibly do you zero harm and provide an actual benefit. There are plenty of snake identification sites that will help you figure out what you have. If it's nonvenomous (and it probably is), leave it alone. It will find its way out.

Well still no sign of snake again today. He must have went away after inserting the moth balls. I poured bleach into the "ribs" of the boat. Flushed it with water for a while. Let it drain out of the plug hole. Still no snake. I searched the boat over good. Then I got in the boat cleaned it a bit and then loaded more stakes in it to drive Saturday. hopefully the snake moved on. My buddy said tuesday in his yard 50 yards from the boat the blue jays were having a fit over something in his yard. it could have been the snake.

Wind Knot beat me to it, but I was going to say better a snake in the boat than a nest of mice! If you don't want him just send him to me ... when you find him that is... love to have him under my camper! :welcome

Gotta put my two cents in. I have wade fished Florida with a 22 pistol loaded with CCI shotshells in it. They are loaded with #12 shot, also known as dust, and open a pattern about as big as a paper plate at 10 to 12 feet, very effective. They will not cycle a semi auto but will pattern well, and do no damage to a metal boat. I would want safety glasses on. Never needed more than one shot, and I've used it enough to be confident in it. Should it be non poisonous, I hope , for its own sake it has moved to more peaceful pastures.

Spray him with Starting Fluid It contains ether. He will not be able to breath and will exit where he is at. It works like a champ just let it air out good before you start it - no sparks.

That doesn't sound like a good idea, an accident waiting to happen. There are other ways. Just my two cents.

I would go to the pet store and get a little mouse, then get a fishing pole and hook the mouse to the line and go fishing for a snake.

You could pour some bleach in the bottom of the boat, I bet that would run it out.

Drove 800 stakes Saturday. No sign of snake. I think he did both of us a favor and left the boat. :popcorn Dang it was hot!

Why not invite the snake to a BBQ and let him meet the family? Maybe once you have counseled him and let him see you are just a nice guy, he wont BITE YOU IN THE FACE as you lean over to tend to your batteries!

I would far rather learn how to identify the handful of harmful snakes than live in fear each day that I'm outside. To be a grown man living in fear of an animal that has literally zero chance of inflicting harm on you is silly and I'm proud to know that I'm smarter than that.

Snakes eat...you gonna feed him? What? Rats? That should smell great! Just what I want in my boat, snakes, rats, and snake poo. What if you have people that get in this boat (like the guy that OWNS it) who doesn't like snakes? Not a far stretch, most smart people I know don't. What if his wife gets in and it crawls across her foot. You think shes gonna take the time to look up the snake on her ipad to see if it will hurt her? No, because shes SMARTER than that! Doing that could get her bitten and sick or dead.

You know.... you never see the guy that's "scared of snakes" getting bit on TV....its always the DUMB one trying to teach me something about one that gets bit in the face.

Give it up already! He didn't want the snake living in the boat, that's why he asked for opinions as to how to get rid of it.

Not everybody out there is so scared of snakes that they will kill any or all of them on sight. I've caught and moved several large cottonmouths from around my taxidermy studio to get them away from my dogs and out of the vicinity of others who might be scared of them. They have a place in nature just like crappie or crappie fishermen do.

Most of what you're arguing falls in the category of a false dilemma (feeding snakes rats in a boat) or a red herring (carrying an ipad to identify a snake). I'll say this one more time- I would far rather be able to identify the three or four snakes that can cause harm than live my life in fear. Especially since I identify myself as an outdoorsman. If I couldn't handle living in a world that may have snakes in it I just wouldn't leave the house. Man, there are only four venomous species in the USA. They're not hard to point out. I have a harder time identifying white and black crappie sometimes!

Ive been a sportsman all my life...never been bit....done pretty good killing every snake I come across. I don't get bit, and what do you know....theres still plenty of snakes. I understand what a king snake is, or a rat snake, and there place in the food chain, im not an idiot. But none of them have a place in my house or my BOAT. To argue otherwise doesn't make you smart, it makes you argumentative.

Haha. You may want to rethink killing kingsnakes if you can identify them. They eat other snakes, even venomous ones and their musk as actually a snake repellant. An enemy of my enemy is my friend or something like that.

Only 2 kinds of snakes....Anaconda's and Rattlesnakes. If its not big enough to be anaconda, it HAS to be rattlesnake. Either way KILL IT!!!!!

Well, it's good to see that strawmen made an appearance in your argument. That covers the big three for logical fallacies. There is no reasonable argument for killing nonvenomous snakes. There isn't even a reasonable argument for being scared of nonvenomous snakes unless you can't tell the difference between venomous and nonvenomous ones. They literally can't hurt you.

And I'll use insecticide in a heartbeat, but I'm not going to spray my pit with it. I'd far rather smoke them out.

Whether its a snake, a gator, girls, horses, cows, dogs, cats, ect........... that scares someone it really doesnt have to be reasonable to you or anyone else, to each their own. Maybe I should type out the entirety of my thoughts better than I do...I see you need every detail in this all important debate over killing a snake in a boat. (which should be no more of a debate than what color a green frog is). NO ONE...not even Wind Song would allow a snake to live in his boat....which is what I originally commented on. (the fact that it was ridiculous) Which I still stand firmly on BTW.

I hate snakes. Cant tell ya why no more than you can tell me why you're scared of rough seas, or the dark, or clowns...or whatever it is that gives you the crawls. Go ahead, tell us nothing affects you that way...maybe you're special...congrats. My point was the deer stand choice was a choice that affected ME...the cotton mouth on the ditch lets say, while duck hunting, or scouting in the summertime, is going to die because it will not inhibit anything Im doing to dispatch it, which is what I FEEL needs to happen. I cant express to you, how little I am concerned with how that may make someone feel (me killing a snake), I would give it no more concern than stepping on a spider or squishing a tick.

I hope I have expressed clearly this time my position on killing snakes to your satisfaction. I thought about submitting my response to someone smarter than me to proofread, someone who may be more enlightened and well rounded than I...a snake lover perhaps. But, then I didn't. Edit to add- Genesis references smashing the head of THE serpent. In this case, it is referring to Satan, who was also referred to as the shiny thing in surrounding passages. There are also references to snakes that shine a positive light on them, in Genesis, even!

Alaska has no known venomous snakes, and Hawaii only has a sea snake that's venomous.

Now, of course, this doesn't take into account any (legal or illegal) "imports" that might escape from their owners ... these are just the indigenous ones.

Thanks. I checked the photos of each out. Although i never got a good look a the head, I did see the body and tail. Very sure was not either rattle snake. Was not the cotton mouth. Similar to the southern copperhead but do not think that was it either. an education for me for sure!
