    Default Comperssor oil

Now I can go to town and buy compressor motor oil all day long.
    The problem is the cost.

Can anyone tell me why a synthetic 5w30 would Harm a compressor? 5 HP elecrtic 30 gal. Like that would make a differemce.

When you ask about viscosity for a compressor where they sell 'compressor oil' . No one has given me an answer I would take to the bank.

    What's your thoughts?

Regular automotive type oil has detergent in it and will foam in a air compressor because the crankshaft in a aircompressor hits the oil and it will create foam. Compressor oil will not do this. The problem with the foam is You do not have a continous film of oil on your bearings....you have half oil and half air bubbles. Air bubble do not lubricate so you will damage your compressor.

Hermetic motors, motor winding run in oil as do some submersible pump motors. I think G understands what you are asking. I rewind electrical apparatus, this is my world and the only one I understand. Being the idiots I am and knowing there and a gazillion kinds of compressors. This is the oil we use in air conditioning compressors, pumps and many types of compressors.

    That was a joke people.

I've been around this stuff a long time too.

I'm just wondering, and maybe I should have used the tern 'non continuous'.

So then why not use an oil like lower unit oil in a synthetic blend? Although I don't know if there would be a cost difference. That is a non-foaming oil, less the detergents. Correct?

I by the air compressor oil for my air compressor at NAPA Auto Parts....It cost 4 something a Quart. Just ask the for Air Compressor oil. I have a Ingorsall Rand two stage 5 HP compressor with a 60 gallon tank and its too expensve piece of equipment for me to take a chance on some other type oil.
