This is just copied from a discussion board from the free online Hillsdale College course titled "History 101 Western Heritage - From the Book of Genesis to John Locke". It was posted by others taking this course and fits very well in this thread about the very necessary push back that is required in apposing this on coming onslaught by the liberal liberty violators that will now be on the rampage.

I hope that, when the United Nations' Treaty to Ban Handguns (or "small weapons") will be debated in the U.S. Senate for its possible ratification, after it has been signed by this Obama Administration, the American People will clearly recall these words of Thomas Hobbes and resist its ratification by all means: "For the right men have by nature to protect themselves, when none else can protect them, can by no covenant be relinquished."
Hobbes called this "second [law of nature] the sum of the right of nature, which is: by all means we can to defend ourselves." This second law of nature is incorporated as the second right in the U.S. Bill of Rights, i.e. as the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution of 1789.
The new age of Islamic and domestic terrorism, continuing cross-border drug wars, violent aftermath of natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina, criminal actions, and random school shootings, demonstrate that neither police nor soldiers can protect ourselves. So, this natural right to self protect and self defense cannot be relinquished ever.

Re: Self protection
Professor Cornelis A. Los;
I agree with you 100%. I have had many discussions with friends about the second amendment right to bear arms. My political science instructor when I was a freshman stated unequivocally that the second amendment never meant for people to be able to own weapons. That it , instead, gave to states the right to form a militia and police force etc. I never bought this argument; even less so now.
Gun control is such a hot button topic. Many people try to compare 1776, when most people owned a musket, to today when one can own any variety of assorted semi-automatic weapons.
After the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy on Friday new calls for gun control will surely be made from every segment of society opposed to gun ownership.
Unfortunately, there is usually nothing that can be said one way or another that will change anyone's mind about the issue.
As a military veteran, I see that predominately women and mothers are behind the drive to rid society of guns. That some control is necessary is hard to deny. But when guns are confiscated one has only to look at history to see the dire outcomes. Joesph Goebbels would be proud knowing that his propaganda technique is taking hold even in the US of A. His technique was simple: spew out a simple proposition
over and over again until it hits and sticks to the inside cranial wall of simple-minded brains.
A LITTLE GUN HISTORY (Author unknown)
In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
------------------------
In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
------------------------
Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
------------------------
China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated
------------------------
Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
---- -------------
Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend
themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
------------------------
Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
------------------------
Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56
million.

Gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own Government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are:
1. Australia-wide, homicides were up
3.2 percent.
2. Australia-wide, assaults were
up 8.6 percent.
3. Australia-wide, armed
robberies were up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!
4. In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess
their guns!
5. While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since criminals now are
guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.
6. There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort,
and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it.
My Comment: Last Night Democracy Now, with Amy Goodman, did a segment on Gun Control in Australia in the aftermath of the Port Arthur Massacre in 1996 in which 35 people were killed. The claim was that no large scale shootings have occurred since then because the government took immediate action to curtail ownership of semi-automatic weapons. Yet, the statistics above paint a different picture.
You won't see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information.
Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect
only the law-abiding citizens.
Take note my fellow Americans, before it's too late!
The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind them of this history lesson.
With guns, we are 'citizens'. Without them, we are 'subjects'.
During WWII the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were
ARMED!
If you value your freedom, please spread this anti-gun control message to all of your friends.
The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense. The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either. The final weapon is the brain. All else
is supplemental.
SWITZERLAND ISSUES EVERY HOUSEHOLD A GUN! SWITZERLAND 'S GOVERNMENT TRAINS EVERY ADULT THEY ISSUE A RIFLE. SWITZERLAND HAS THE LOWEST GUN RELATED CRIME RATE OF ANY

IT'S A NO BRAINER! DON'T LET OUR GOVERNMENT WASTE MILLIONS OF OUR TAX DOLLARS IN AN EFFORT TO MAKE ALL LAW ABIDING CITIZENS AN EASY TARGET."
