I been thinkin 2.0

Back to crappie, dead tree stumps, old treetops always hold fish better than green ones. When green leaves decay they give off tannins that run fish off. Not only does the fallen tree top hafta be dead B UT DEAD FOR A WHILE IF THE PART OUT OF THE WATER STILL HAS GREEN LEAVES ON IT IT MEANS THEY WONT BITE as well I was taught that by my great grand pa and only learned why later,

Then why do all the experts say its best to put out brushtops that still have leaves on them? They say it grows more algae and attracts more baitfish. Thats the first Ive ever heard about them producing tannins and running off fish. Not sayin its wrong....just never heard it.

Dunno. I've heard both sides of this coin. I've caught fish off both as well, not the coin but tree tops that is. :-)

Thanks for that clarification 20. I been catching off brush(in the water) with fresh leaves in 25 ft.

Yeah Danny. I don't think those green trout care if it's live or dead. I've caught many a bass pulling a spinner bait through a green leafy limb or top.

I have caught crappie in tops with dying leaves also. So who knows?? If you're asking my preference though I'm taking no leaves 9 to 1. :-)

But back to my first thought. I catch more fish on stumps and dead standing timber than I do on live cypress. Some days it doesn't matter, there's fish on all of it but other days it makes all the difference.

Cappy does have a point about tannins. The leaching from decaying vegetation happens which produces the black water we often see in still calm water. More so with hardwoods than softwoods I believe - not sure. I have noticed it most often after a major storm. They will give off a tea colored water in an aquarium or small garden pond. Won't make a difference in a large body of water like Toledo Bend, etc. due to the volume around the structure. I've seen Coon (guide at Toledo Bend) several times haul out fresh cut branches. I guess it depends where you fish if it makes a difference.

I was talking about white perch 20. Waiting on the green fish to move out. They running late.
