    Default Last Friday's fishing report

I retired from work last Thursday (!), so I took the kayak to my favorite lake Friday. Got a late start because I slept in (since I could get away with it). On the water by 7:30. The Duke women's rowing team ended practice about the time I got going. The river section was still stained from last week's rains, though visibility was better mid-lake. I was more than a mile from the boathouse before I got my first crappie. The bite was slow and the fish ran small, so I don't have any bragging pictures to share. Pulling crankbaits and drifting with jigs were the only ways I could coax srikes. I fished 8 hours and boated 17 crappie & 7 junior bass. The biggest crappie was a lone white crappie ~ a pound, while none of the black crappie were over 10 inches. Total distance paddled was just over 9 miles. Still had a fun day on the water and it beat working in a big way. I haven't decided where I'm going tomorrow or Friday yet. Hopefully I'll have some pictures to share next time.

Congrats on your retirement. That's a lot of miles paddled! I have done that a few times with my pedal drive and it's not easy. Glad you caught some fish - are you talking Falls or other Triangle lake? I am excited to get back on Falls real soon - summer was very slow for me, tried cranks for first time without a lot of success.
