11/13 Black River

Not gonna lie, I've been using one of the NC crappie report fb groups so I haven't posted here in a while. Was on the water at sunlight the day after the rain came, knew I didn't have much time and sure as hell didn't wanna be out there in that kayak when it started to flow. Luckily the Black is a little more forgiving as far as not having 50' trees flying downriver at 45mph trying to kill you. The water did rise considerably in the couple hours I was out, but it had yet start to violently flow. Paddled up and down my favorite cove and marked several schools that were just kind of hanging around out in the deepest part of the cove. Maybe there was some cover or bait out there, but I couldn't see anything on the regular or di. Was able to pick a handful off of a school, move to the next school and do the same, and so on, and so on. I was counting in my head so I only brought home 19. (gotta get a clicker!) I probably caught 20 or 30 more after I stopped putting them in the cooler. One of those every cast days. Very few dinks, no giants. In fact I measured about half of em when I got home and every one that I measured was 10" or 11". Despite the previous day's rain the water was about as clear as I've ever seen it in the Black, at least the sections I fish. I could see my minnow flashing 10' - 12' deep. Good thing it was an overcast morning. Glad I took that opportunity to go because all the rivers are a mess now. I'll be in the salt until the rivers calm down. I've been learning to catch sheepshead, which I think is totally fun and addicting. Also been chasing trout around Wrightsville and Carolina Beaches. Anyway, crappie pics...

Well done. Glad you were able to get out a catch a good mess before the big water started to flow.
It did get me to thinking about how bad it would be to find yourself caught in the big flow when things got dangerous.

You better stay off FB and go fishing more so you can do the reporting. Sheepshead are a blast, hard to learn at first until you figure them out the bite and locations they hang around. Try raw chicken breast cut into one inch pieces marinated in salt over night. When I lived in the Azores that's what my portuguese friend used to catch them with. They seems to like it pretty good. Hope you have good luck with them.
