That's correct, it's not saying any thing about "all about ME", but it says that there is no use of you dead for playing hero. There are plenty of people that will set on here and say "well I would do this" or "I'm going to render aid no matter what". Then their fight or flight response hit's and they will stay back.
There is no problem with being smart in these situations. Even the professionals will assess the situation before acting.
This is not a generational issue, I guess the first responders were taught the wrong way because of generational difference?


NC, don't you think it's possible that people learned to assess the situation before action, because of mistakes made by the older generation? This is how people drown who jump in to save other people who fell into the water. They acted without thinking, went into the water before dawning life jacket or some other floatation device, and lost their life. Thinking at least a little only takes minimal time, but it's worth the investment.

In this particular incident, I think both points that are being made apply. At the end of the day, nobody was seriously injured and that was probably evident from afar after a couple minutes had passed. Also, with the other guy's boat still being under power, there wouldn't have appeared to be the need for a tow.
To many other people's point, there were 8-10 boats and most of them had more than one person in the boat with them, not one person (outside of a guy in a canoe) pulled anchor and idled over in our general area and offered an; "Is everybody ok?". Plenty of them were willing to pull out their phones and record the aftermath though.
I appreciate all of the comments on this post. It was meant to just get some clarity on the legality of the situation (which it did). But, it has turned into a helpful discussion and many people are bringing up good points as to what to look out for and how to safely render aid in the event of an open water accident. Again, thanks for the information and commentary fellas.

I guess and I am not going to argue. some people will always help while others will not, simple as that. I just know if you take your phone out to video someone in distress and then don’t help them that says something about the person you are and your character. Some people don’t want to get involved for whatever reason they use but to video something and then not help. That is a whole other ball of wax.

Rescue without a life jacket,,,Hell NO,,, I frequent some remote beaches,Ocracoke in particular,,,,I carry two lifejackets to the beach in the back of my truck along with my fishing poles,and I hope I never have to use them.
