Not sure of your fishfinder situation, but in the colder months, I have found mine to be essential to locating (and catching) suspended and bottom crappie.

I had good luck around the Fearrington point bridge yesterday. There are a lot of fish stacked up on the bottom up to 10-12 feet upward. You will catch plenty of white perch, the occasional white bass and crappie fishing double drop minnow rigs on the bottom. I like using a UL rod with 3/8 oz drop sinker and occasionally bouncing it off the bottom. There will be a very slight thump most times when a fish hits. Set the hook and reel them up gently.

If you want to focus more on crappie, fish jigs suspended along the pilings. I have seen some people haul up a lot of nice fish that way.

When the weather gets warmer, you can troll the creeks with several rods. 1 knot for jigs and 1.5-1.8 for 100 series Arkie crappie cranks (get at Walmart). You will catch all sorts of stuff pulling crankbaits in the creeks in the spring and summer.

    Hope this helps!
