I finished up 2016 with a good trip and some nice fish. Today I started 2017 with a good trip and some nice fish. I hope this continues. Fished one of the small Triad lakes today. Caught 47 crappie, and 3 largemouth. Longline trolling with jigs. Crappie were mostly small as usual on this lake but did have a couple of 10 inch fish. Noted mud stains on the bellies of a lot of the fish, so that tells how deep they were.
Watched as a rod went off and bent down wonderfully. Held to the fish for a long time as I was targeting 17 ft at the time and took a while to get it up. Nice largemouth. As I was lifting it into the boat, I heard a drag zing on the other side of the boat and again a rod bent down wonderfully. I quickly put the bass in the livewell and grabbed the other rod. Fought the fish for a long time and finally saw another nice largemouth come to the top. The two fish weighed 5 1/2 lb and 6 1/2 lb. Set up my camera and took some pictures and put them back in the livewell for about 30 minutes to regroup before releasing them.
I was experimenting today with litewire jigs from Curtis Hobbs with "Litewire Hooks". These were kindly given to me by Chuck Haley to try out. The 6 1/2 lb bass was caught on one of these gigs. I may be a believer now.
A nice start to 2017 and a good day on the water for mid-January.
Rick

I'd say those hooks are plenty strong enough to hold onto those big trash fish.
