Finally the wind calmed down some and I got back on the water and fished Lake Higgins yesterday. My wife recently retired from work, so I have a new First Mate. We caught 107 crappie, 2 warmouths, and one catfish. Caught all long lining with jigs. Water temp was 60 degrees, so I was thinking shallow but they were not there. Moved into 15' to 17' and still no good. Tried in 25' with jigs down around 15' and still only a fish here and there. Decided to try my Winter pattern and went down to 20' to 22' and the bite was on. Steady bite remainder of the day and left them biting. I was surprised that they would be on or near the bottom this deep. Had one 14" fish that weighed 1 3/4 lb and several other nice sized fish. Kept five for a meal. Typical for Lake Higgins, not a lot of larger fish. Wind was an issue but a good day on the water.
