    Default Lake Higgins 1-28-16

Needed to get back on the water. Weatherman said today would be the least amt of wind for the next 10 days. Fished Lake Higgins for nearly four hours. Caught 37 crappie, a 6 lb 9 oz channel catfish, and a large shad. All caught long lining jigs 18 to 22 ft deep. Water temp was 40 degrees and the wind did stay nearly calm. The catfish was quite a challenge on 6 lb line and 20 ft deep. Got him in and no tangles. The shad really did hurt my feelings. Rod folded down like the big fish do and pulling hard and finally came up to the top some distance back of the boat. I could see that it was broad like a crappie. I was sure of a 2 lb plus only to get it close and see a foul hooked shad. The crappie were mostly small with a couple of keepers. Kept a few which have already hit the grease. Beautiful day with snow on the hillsides and ducks and coots on the lake. I was the only boat out there.

I use removal split shot to get down to the desired depth. I have experimented with different sizes of split shot to determine how deep each size will run. I troll at .8 to .9 mph and pull a combo rig of 1/16 oz and 1/32 oz jigs.
