Default lowrance gen 2 or 3

Decided I need a new unit. Problem is I can't decide between the gen 2 or gen 3. Also not sure about the touch screen. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I stayed away from the touch screen because I was thinking what it would look like after handling fish and minnows and then putting my fingers on the screen,

Don't know much about the gen 3. I have an HDS8 Gen 2. Couldn't imagine needing more. Very easy to use. Don't have the touch screen. I agree with mayoflash, same reason I didn't go with touch screen. The short cut buttons make it very easy to get around.

I was told that on gen 3 you could use buttons or touch screen, either one you wanted to use at the time.

The original Gen 2 has buttons, the upgraded Gen 2 has touch, and the Gen 3 has both. I am looking at a 7" myself. The Gen 3 is $1500 if you want sidescan, that is why I'm leaning to the Gen 2.

I have no experience with the touch screen DF's, but I do know that my IPhone doesn't know that I'm touching the screen on cold days.

Stay away from touch screens especially if you are a striper fisherman fishing in the rain/drizzle.

When i set up my boat i was looking at the hds5. It was an absolute no brainer to get the hds7 as it already came out cheaper then to get it with all costal info preloaded.
hds5 is made for the lake fisherman without the costal nav loaded. Couldnt be happier with my hds7 gen 2.

Some guys think they need the fancy side scan 3d imaging stuff ect ect. Its not the electronics that put the fish in the boat

I have to disagree with the above. I have the HDS 9 Gen 2 Touch and it works. I have fished with it in the rain, snow, well below freezing, and it works. With side-scan you just tap the screen wherever there is a school of fish or structure you want to check out, and it puts a waypoint in. Much easier than using buttons to scroll through the sonar or GPS screens. It has made alot of days that I would have been skunked before very productive.

I agree with yprob. I have an hds 7 gen 2 touch with lsss2 side scan technology. the touch is wonderful (as is the side scan), works in any condition, and is sooooo easy to program and then change settings as desired. I think the guys arguing against the touch probably don't have one or they wouldn't be arguing against it.
