Well I didn't get to go perch jerkin as planned, though it seemed I could've. The last weather report I saw said today was gonna be 50% chance of rain and 12mph winds, so I stayed off the lake and opted to go to the Black River for crappie (of course the weather turned out fine). Talked my Mom into going with me and man did she have a blast!! We brought home 17 keepers all 10-12" (nothing spectacular) and had at least 20 throwbacks. Best winter fishing I've had on the Black River yet, as far as numbers. Still haven't caught any big ones this year, but I have caught way more small ones than normal. Maybe the 5 year cyclical thing?? Anyways.. long lined some and tight lined some. Half shiners half Gulp! minnows. Tight lining worked better. River was high, maybe 3 feet. Started the morning in my regular cove and caught 1 keeper, 2 throwbacks, and a blackfish. Picked up and moved to a cove I've never fished, just saw it on google earth and wanted to try it. This cove is great! With the high water it was over 20 ft in the channel, with a nice drop off from a 10 foot deep flat. Fish were on that drop off. Picked up about ten keepers there tight lining then packed it up to go home. Stopped at a fallen tree at the mouth of that cove that looked fishy and picked up 5 more keepers in rapid succession. Also wanted to say how cool it was to take my mom today. She doesn't get out much and she really had a blast. It was special and I was glad I could put her on some fish. Sorry for being so long winded but it just an awesome day putting my mom on some fish (she'd never been crappie fishing). Ok.... Yellow Perch next week. Or maybe tomorrow... hmmm
