State deploys water mixers in Jordan Lake

If some of you guys get a chance to fish around these new circulators, please let us know if they attract fish. Theoretically, adding oxygen to the water should attract fish, especially in the hot days of July and August. I've caught some good fish up in Morgan before and I've seen Chainsaw Danny bringing in big catches in this area. I honestly don't think it will do anything much about lowering the amount of algae in these two areas. I have more confidence in shad as filter-feeders doing a better job than these fans. The end result could be that it helps us fishermen more than anything else. If any of you fish around these circulators, please give us a report.


Pittsboro, N.C. — State officials began deploying solar-powered water circulators in Jordan Lake on Monday in the latest attempt to battle pollution in the lake.

Lawmakers last year approved testing the SolarBee machines when they issued a three-year moratorium on the Jordan Lake Rules, a set of upstream development regulations designed to limit runoff into the lake.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has designated Jordan Lake as impaired under the federal Clean Water Act because excessive amounts of algae that formed in the lake due to the gradual buildup of nutrients from stormwater runoff, wastewater and other sources.

Twelve SolarBees will be spaced 1,300 feet apart in the Haw River arm in the southern part of Jordan Lake, and 24 other machines will be similarly spaced in the Morgan Creek arm at the northern end of the lake. State environmental officials said these arms have demonstrated high levels of chlorophyll-a due to the amount of nutrients coming into the lake.

The Division of Water Resources has performed baseline sampling in the lake and will test the water once a month for 18 months with the SolarBees in place. The agency will report its findings to the General Assembly by Oct. 1, 2015.

neighbor was told if he put a windmill, with hose in pond, to aerate the water, it would clear his pond of algae! can't even fish in it now cause the algae seemed to grow faster.

I have a 1 ac pond. When it get green algae on it I put 1 cup of Boran in it and in about 3 days it is gone. I get it at a local feed store.

There is really only three ways to stop algae. Poison it to kill it. Stain or dye the water to keep the light from getting to it. Or big deeper so the light doesn't penetrate the water enough to let it get started. Its all about light. Oxygen has nothing to do with it. In fact, oxygen might make it worse. It will help the fish. In that respect, I say let it roll.

One cup in an acre pond? Potent stuff.

Something bad came down that creek and we are all suffering. Don't be fooled those "oxygenators" are not there to soley oxygenate the water they are there to better mix or dilute whatever comes down the creek
