Fished Smithville with a buddy Saturday .. the fishing wasn't very good, but we stumbled upon a bird (looks like a duck to me) hanging dead with his head/neck stuck between a branch split in the tree. We had a couple of theories, but I'm curious how you guys think this happened ..

Not sure about the bird but that tree row looks really good. I have got to get back up there for some more late summer slabs out of the hedge forest above W bridge. Got to get my guide Dexter to show me the way again.
That there is a mystery. Branch had to break while the bird was perched, I would think? But how it got its neck stuck in there....that I have no idea.
Not sure it's a duck though, but I'm sure you had a better look at it. Wings look awfully far back. But that could be what they do when it dies?
Whereabouts was this? Not that I want to go get a closer look. Just want to know where NOT to fish!![]()
Looks like a comorant to me! Plenty of them shark duxs around Eating all our fish!
it's a cormorant I bet
I'm not familiar with my birds, so I'm sure you guys are right on the comorant. I just can't figure out how it happened. What you can't see in the photos is another small branch that stuck out from under the bird .. almost like he would've been landing on that branch. I would think if the top perch would've split, he would've kept himself from falling straight down. ??![]()
Limb probably broke when it landed or when it was trying to take flight. Strange twist of fate...but somehow his head went down into the fork of those limbs strangling it or breaking it's neck?!?![]()
