Don't want calls or junk mail? Here is what you do.
1. Protect your private interest from "harmless" leaks. What are leaks? Ever fill out a survey? Ever answer a poll via an unsolicted phone call? (Polls are exempt from dnc regulations.) All of those "leaks" putt your information out there in data banks that marketers will buy by certain demographic parameters. It is a billion dollar or more industry. Companies like Axiom, home officed in Little Rock, AR. do nothing but gather and sell information on us. A little bit here and a little bit there and you have painted a pretty good picture of yourself in the data world.
2. Never ever return things like Publishers Clearing House, political action letters, or share information with current entities that you are affiliated such as credit cards, retailers, etc. Ever have BassPro or Westlake Ace Hardware ask for your phone number? Did you give it to em? You just shared information about your buying habits and it will not only be used by that retailer, but it will be sold.
Want to run a test to check my opinion? The next time you get a survey or marketing piece where you can alter or give incorrect information, do so. One time I filled out a life insurance offer as Golden Brown. Over the years I've repeatedly got mail from all sorts to Golden Brown... that was over a decade ago. A couple years ago I told some jack leg on the phone I was an architect and made north of $500k/year. Real soon I start getting calls from NY based stock brokerage firms and now I enjoy a free subscription to Architecture Digest.
The best way to get to where you want to be in the future is to act like you are there TODAY.
