KLB, I have a German Shepard female that we got as a pup. I personally would advise to go to a breeder and pick out a pup and raise it up with the family. Be sure and have the pup checked out for back trouble. The breed is known for bad troubles. By getting a pup and raising it up it will become a member of the family and become very protective of the family. And it will become a great friend too.

Our German Shepard, lives in our fenced in back yard and she knows when a strange car or truck pulls into the neighbors driveway. And she will bark, but she will not bark if it's one of the neighbors family members.

Thanks for the information, unfortunately, the breeders I have called want thousands of dollars for a puppy, I really cant afford over $50, lol. We would love to get a German Sheperd and give it a good caring home but we cannot afford what breeders want. Hopefully I can find some puppies, or a younger male GS dog. Thanks for the info, I hope we find one!

Keep looking I found ours in the Springfield newspaper and I gave $250.00 for her as a puppy. I found the ad and called and the wife and I drove to Collins, MO that night to get her. Her grand mother was a police dog.

Having puppies on June 3-4. Female is from a long line of show sheperds, and the dog of lthis litter is # 2 rated GS in the country. Best three from the litter will be kept for show, and the balance will be EXCELLENT pet quality with awesome temperment and genetics (aka NO hip or elbow problems). They will sell for $750. or I'll keep them all. Send me a PM if you're interested.

Try looking into any rescue centers or Human Society places. Even though I don't like what the Human Society does most of the time They usually have dogs to be adopted and your expense will be small. I would think there would be several around Columbia. After my son and daughter in laws 2 old dogs died they adopted 1 from a shelter. He was already old and had been at the shelter a long time. He had been a watch dog at a junk yard(?) and had been shot by the owner at some point with a shotgun. They had him for 2 years before he died. He was a good watch dog and kept their beagle company. They want to get adopt another dog but waiting on job situations to stabilize. They may have to move to Cleveland.

I agree with Should be plenty of shepard/mix pups at area shelters. Go pick out a pup and let him become part of the family.
