I've had a 97 Chevy 5.7L, hard to beat, had 248k when I get rid of it. I'm assuming you want something a little newer. I've had several 5.3L 05 Suburban to a 07 Tahoe. Great motor that I haven't had any trouble with. In a Chevy if you stick with the full size p/u's I don't think you can go wrong. My work truck is a 09 Crew Cab with the 4.8L. A lot of guys don't like the 4.8 but it pulls my boat fine. It's not a powerhouse by any means but it gets the job done. I want to say they bought it for 22k with 13,000 miles on it. You might find a regular cab like it for about what your looking to spend. Below is a link to one I saw on a local dealers site. As you can see I only know Chevy's! I like Fords to, the guys at work would kill me if I was in a Toyota so I know nothing there. Hope this helps. I average about 18.5mpg in my crew cab similar to this truck.

Not sure where their database is pulled from but everyone who's owned a vehicle that's had a problem, I'll be dipped if it didn't show up as a yellow or red.
I'm not a msn supporter, but whoever put this database together did their homework.
just wish i'd know about it before buying that POS Suburban with the 6.5L.

unfortunately, right now the price/value of used cars/vehicles have gone up considerably since the economy tanked a few years ago. Lots of people are in the same boat as you, looking for a good used vehicle as they cannot afford or afraid to buy a new one due to the costs and uncertainty over job stablity. if you could find a base base base model of the truck you like, you might could get low rate financing if your credit is good which can save you lots and lots of $$. Don't rule out new until you have looked. Go with whatever brand you feel comfortable with, everyone has their preference.

I think you get more truck for your money when you buy Dodge.I had a 2000 ram 4x4 loved it.Now I have a durango and love it.There not gas sippers though.

seriously though, I work cars and trucks every day and I can tell ya that they all have their issue. if I had to say one brand was the most "mechanic free", Id go with toyota, I see them the least on the back of our roll-backs.(tow trucks)
I personaly drive a 97 ford 4x4 with the 4.6 in it. I like it, it's been good to me. stay away from the ford's 5.7litre, they are known to have some issues.

I'm a chevy guy through and through....that being said I always purchase used as well. I bought my 03 gmc sierra extended cab a couple years ago with a little under 100k for 9 grand from a dealer. At least if you buy used from a dealer you'll get a 30 day warranty. I've got the 4.8 like 70ss496 and as he stated, it is far from a power house but will do anything I want it to. Has a computer which tells the gas mileage.....running down the highway it will read in the low 20's. It has an average MPG as well and is a mix of pulling the boat for 40 miles to the lake, driving 15 miles to work which is half through town, and just simply going to town. Don't do much traveling out of town and the average is right around 16. Think I get around 13 pulling the boat, 11 pulling our 20 camper. I just don't think there are too many people who can deny that the vortec motor is a long lasting motor. I've got 120k on my truck now and figure it is only halfway broke in. Just my opinion.. Father in law is a Dodge man hard core. He has an 01 dakota 6 cylinde 5 speed and I know he use to not be very impressed with gas mileage out of it. We have a 09 charger 6 cylinder and it's doing good to get 22 mpg.

Ok, just remember that this is coming from a dumb city slicker, but with common cents. I like pick ups but don't like the gas mileage they get. My son has a ford raptor which he is lucky to get 12 mpg on the highway. I would think the average on pickup trucks is 19 mpg. When you have to drive 60 miles a day to work the gas adds up. My thoughts is the best value out there is a used lincoln town car. You can pick one of these up for $6000-$10000 that has low mileage 30,000 -60,000 miles on them. These cars are previously owned by older people who take good care of them, hardly drive them and keep them in the garage all the time. They are loaded with option, very nice stereos and heated seats. These cars are like brand new. The trunks are huge and so is the back seat. The best thing is they have rear air suspension, so when you hook up the boat and load up the trunk the air suspension will air up to level out the car. You get 23-24 mpg (not towing) if you keep your foot out of it on the highway. Also Jeff, you are less likely to get pulled over because they think its some 90 year old guy that is driving the car. They have the full frame and powered by a 4.6 liter. When your not towing the boat you are driving in comfort. Just keep a check on craigslist and you'll find one of these low mileage cars. Most of them are around 2003 year.
