Hey folks, I have a tree question. I have 3 grey dogwood trees in my yard. 2 in the front yard and 1 in the backyard. they are all from a MDC conservation bundle and 4 years old. the tree in the back yard has never flowered, but the 2 in the front yard have flowered for the past 3 springs. we the 2 in the front yard seem to be confused this year because over the past 2 weeks they have budded up again and last weekend they flowered for the second time this year. actually the flowers are bigger and more plentiful that ever. dogwood flowers in august??? Am I missing something? I have talked to several people about this and no one has an answer for me. the only thing I have done to them this year is I trimmed them her awhile back because the leaves were really weighing them down and I didn't want them to break off a limb. and last winter I spread my wood stove ashes around them and my lilac bushes. the reason I did this is because I heard that the ashes help the plants flower and it worked for the lilac as this was the first year that it ever bloomed.
so I guess I told ya all that to ask you this; does mean the crappie are about to spawn again? LOL!!!
seriously though, anybody have a clue about this???

The Pacific Dogwood sometime bloom in August. I haven't seen Fryguy on here in a while, but he's a tree expert.
Put a post out there saying " Hey Fryguy " to get his attention. I think he still checks out the forum now an then.

Sometimes when trees go through a stressful situation after they have already bloomed they will bloom again. When I say stresful I mean excessive heat, disease, or pruning. The reason some trees bloom and others dont is sometimes unexplainable. But usually it has to do with nutrient deficiency, excessive or lack of shade. If your tree that isnt blooming is next to a larger tree it might not be getting enough sunlight. Without actually seeing the tree it is really hard to give an explanation.
Also the flowers are larger and more plentiful due to the same size root system but less leaves to support. So more nutrients are diverted to buds which produce more and bigger flowers.
thanks for the reply's. I'll try to take some pics of these trees and have my better half show me how to post em. labsnslabs, you might be correct about the dogwood that has not flowered yet because it sits within 25ft of a large walnut and within 40ft of a medium sized white oak. but those larger trees are to the north of the dogwood so it still gets a full day of sunlight. I also have never pruned that tree and it is due for a haircut. the trees in the front yard have no shade at all and they have looked really healthy from the start. I'm definatly not complaining about my trees flowering again, my yard could use some color this summer, other than brown!
