Last time we were up there, everybody kept talking about the "long weekend holiday," and we couldn't figure out what holiday they were talking about.
Apparently, it's actually called the "Long Weekend"!!?!?! Couldn't really wrap my head around that one, but it was good for a laugh.

Not sure when you're planning on going, but like someone else said Lake of the Woods is hard to beat. And there's really no need to be intimidated by it, its a lot smaller than you think if you stay in some of the bays. We went 3 years in a row during the first week of june. It all depends on the weather and the water temp, as some years we really had to work for the walleye but the pike and smallies couldn't stay off our lures. When the weather was warm we caught a lot of walleye in shallow on jigs, and then TONS of smallmouth on little crankbaits, jerkbaits, and tubes. We stayed at a little resort near the town of Morson, ON. There's several little resorts around that area. We took our own boats and had enough people with us that were knowledgeable of the area that we didn't have to get a guide. Honestly if you buy a topographical map you should be able to find plenty of spots to fish.
Not saying you should do this, but this was my experience with Canada and it was awesome.
